This is pilot error. PERIOD. Having landed a USMC CH-46A in 1969 on many, many ships - including hospital ships? and the USS New Jersey - a critique of this reckless approach is quite simple: The pilot's approach is TOO LOW & TOO FAST. See the painted area with the X in it. That is where your wheels touch the first and only time you come aboard the ship. One does not slip into the landing zone from just off the stern! This is not an opinion, it is a cold hard fact of life.

I read the description above. I understand the initial crash was human error but, seven people died after the crash because, safety lights? FAILED,helicopter flotation device FAILED to activate, pilot's escape door FAILED to open. My point is, with the high cost of these machines why all the failures that cost lives.

This helo is not a billion dollars. They cost about 7 million in mid 1980's dollars, but were made in the 60's. They are all well over 40 years old. When you are able to land a plane or a helo on a pitching deck, then come talk to me. It's called human error, and? it was an accident.

I was on the ship when this happened. I was three people away from the camera guy. The rear wheel got stuck and the pilot freaked out. when the pilot gave more collective (power), the wheel snapped causing the 46 to crash and go over board. We (ship) could not reach the men inside quick enough. The 46 sank quickly due to the fact of the floatation safety devices not working. I lost two? good friends that day. This is clearly, 100% accident.

I was an OS stationed on the Bonhomme Richard when this tragedy took place. I worked in CIC and will never forget this day. I was in the per-briefing with them, and all? was going well up until this point. I will always remember their radio transmissions previous to this, and the radio transmissions from the bridge of the Pecos. Utter confusion and sadness in the aftermath. We searched for 12 hours straight after that, never finding anything. I think of and remember the deceased every day. RIP

First of all i am sorry for those who died on that day.? am a wreck researcher.? need information for my archive.Would you mind to answer? my 2 questions= 1.Was the wreck of the helicopter later salvaged,or did they left it on the bottom of the sea after salvaging the bodies of the crew? 2.?f left,what is the conditions of the wreck?

Do? you even realize what 1st Recon is? 30 days ahead of the rest of the Marine Corps, cleaning up making things pretty for battalion. No reinforcements, no resupply, no medivac, crazy stuff. 1st Recon dieing in a helicopter wreck is kind of a harsh way to go for such an elite reconnaissance group.
